In our first class, teacher asks us to choose a subject and make a title for our position paper. Then I make my title name “is it necessary for people to have marriage?” It is because that people’s opinion toward marriage has great change in recent years, and I want to tell people that good marriage depends on trust and love by each other. They do not have to panic when being close to the proper age of marriage. But teacher tells me that this title is too broad and these “people” should be focused on specific part of the masses. That time I make a little change about it. I turn it into “is it necessary for career women to have marriage?” People are narrowed down to “career women.”
After starting writing my position paper and doing each weeks’ assignments, I still find some problems. I think my title can be easily leaded to another kind of discussion about women. In the end, the way of talking about marriage will make people feel like a feminist’s aggressive arguing for women’s right. By this meeting, I discuss this problem with teacher, and she explains some important points about what elements should a good paper require to me. Maybe it is time for me to rethink about it.
The purpose for writing this paper is to convey our unique opinions, which are some brand new ideas, to others, and the first step of it is to arouse readers’ interest. This is important. If they consider that you are talking about something old and boring, they will not start reading your paper. Afterward, there should be some conflicts within the paper. People would like to know what kind of idea you raise against the one people used to think about. By understanding the writer’s point of view, people get the opportunity to think more about it even some thought or feelings they have never imagined about.
By analyzing the position paper, teacher tells me that I can write in two ways to account for the situation and thinking of women. One is to compare the attitude from people in different generation to these women like their parents and children. The other is a kind of parallel relations between them and people who are the same generation with them. These are possible lines which I can follow. Then I am suggested to find other people’s theses to support my view point and as the sources to advance the paper. It is because that you can get to know whether this is a worthy talking topic by reading others’ opinion about it.
This meeting helps me to deal with the topic’s problems. But, most of us think that it is really difficult to discuss many things in shortly fifteen minutes. Maybe next meeting we can have more time to talk with teacher about each of us’ paper. That will be better for us to ask questions which we have and start the conversation.
